All these questions will be answered at Europe’s Premiere 3D Internet & Virtual worlds conference ‘MetaMeets 2011’ in Amsterdam.

Speakers and workshop leaders will guide you through the world of 3D environments.

‘Let’s Create 3D’ is this years theme to show interactively what software you can use to create what is seemingly the impossible. We will show you how to stream into a virtual world, how to make Machinima, the power of E Learning and how to co create with all kinds of people from around the world.

Second Life-afterparty in Kriterion, Amsterdam,

na première R U There

Première nieuwe film David Verbeek in Kriterion gevolgd door live afterparty in Second Life, waarbij de regisseur, acteurs, bezoekers en hun avatars elkaar ontmoeten.

R U There was in mei van dit jaar dit te zien in het prestigieuze Un Certain Regard-programma van het Cannes-filmfestival, waar hij met staande ovatie werd ontvangen. David Verbeeks nieuwe speelfilm beleeft donderdag 17 juni zijn Nederlandse première, onder andere in het Amsterdamse Kriterion en in EYE. Primeur: de première in Kriterion wordt gevolgd door een live afterparty in Second Life, waarbij de regisseur, acteurs, bezoekers en hun avatars elkaar kunnen ontmoeten.

Première R U There, donderdag 17 juni, 20.30 in Kriterion, Roetersstraat 170, Amsterdam. Voorstellingen in EYE (Vondelpark 3, Amsterdam) en landelijke release vanaf 17 juni. Première in Kriterion in aanwezigheid van regisseur David Verbeek en hoofdrolspeler Stijn Koomen (reserveren: 020 6231708).

Ter gelegenheid van de première in Kriterion organiseren distributeur EYE en theater Kriterion in samenwerking met Ystreams.tv een cross media event. Na de Q & A met David Verbeek en Stijn Koomen – live te volgen in Second Life – volgt een live afterparty op groot doek in Second Life, begeleid door een game night en borrel in de foyer van Kriterion. Regisseur, acteurs, bezoekers en hun avatars kunnen elkaar ontmoeten in Second Life en in gesprek raken rond het virtuele kampvuur. Contacten tussen Real Life- en Second Life-bezoekers worden verzorgd door community managers. Ervaren Second Life-bewoners zullen bezoekers in Kriterion helpen hun eigen avatar aan te maken om in contact te treden met de avatars uit R U There. DJ Messalina Lavendel verzorgt live muziek (swingende cool jazz) vanuit Florida. Het is de eerste keer dat een Nederlandse film op deze manier zijn première beleeft.

De kinderen van Google, You Tube en Second Life

In R U There reist de jonge professionele gamer Jitze (Stijn Koomen) de wereld over om mee te doen aan videogamewedstrijden. Jitze leeft zijn leven vrijwel volledig in de virtuele werkelijkheid, waar hij alles onder controle heeft. Wanneer hij ooggetuige is van een ernstig verkeersongeluk raakt de jongeman van slag: de ruwe kennismaking met de werkelijkheid van real life doet hem zijn sterfelijkheid beseffen. Kort daarna ontmoet Jitze in de lobby van zijn hotel een intrigerende jonge Taiwanese vrouw (Huan-Ru Ke), die hij echter alleen durft te benaderen via zijn avatar in Second Life.

In zijn nieuwe speelfilm, opgenomen in Taiwan, buigt regisseur David Verbeek zich over de eerste generatie jongeren wier levens zich grotendeels voltrekken in de virtuele werkelijkheid. Zijn portret van gamer Jitze schildert het leven van de talloze twintigers die uren per dag aan het beeldscherm gekluisterd zitten. Net als zijn vorige speelfilm Shanghai Trance is R U There een laconieke verkenning van een nieuwe wereld waarin de vormen van menselijk contact sterk veranderen. Een film over de kinderen van Google, You Tube en Second Life.

Over de regisseur

David Verbeek (Amsterdam 1980) studeerde aan de New School University in New York en voltooide in 2005 de regieopleiding van de Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie. Als student trok hij de aandacht met het buitenschools geproduceerde Beat (2003), dat op het International Film Festival Rotterdam in première ging. Verbeeks speelfilmdebuut (budget 500 euro) werd vergeleken met het werk van Aziatische filmers als Tsai Ming-liang en Hou Hsiao-hsien. Naast een aantal korte films maakte Verbeek voor de VPRO-Lolamoviola-reeks de tv-productie Yu-lan (2004), waarin zijn fascinatie voor het opkomende China gestalte kreeg. Voor zijn tweede speelfilm Shanghai Trance (2008, met Tygo Gernandt), een portret van met het leven en de liefde worstelende twintigers in een razendsnel veranderende metropool, ging Verbeek naar China. Hij werkte daar met een voornamelijk Chinese cast en crew. Beat, Shanghai Trance en R U There zijn aangekocht voor de collectie van EYE. R U There wordt later dit jaar in Frankrijk uitgebracht door Jour2Fete.

Workshop Didactisch Gebruik Second Life

Virtuele Werelden bieden veel mogelijkheden voor jouw onderwijs. Maar welke Virtuele Wereld moet je kiezen, en hoe zet je die dan goed in voor uw onderwijs?

In deze workshop kan je antwoord vinden op bovenstaande vragen. Er wordt een oriëntatie op dit onderwerp gegeven. Dit helpt jou te bepalen welke Virtuele Wereld je waarvoor kunt inzetten. Daarbij leer je gelijk zelf te werken met de software van de Virtuele Wereld Second Life: wat zijn de basishandelingen die je moet beheersen (aanmelden bij Second Life, bewegen, communiceren, elementair bouwen, etc.)?

Vervolgens wordt je begeleid om een plan te maken om zelf een onderwijsactiviteit in Second Life te ontwikkelen en ga je zelf daadwerkelijk met het plan aan de slag. Aan het einde van de workshop tonen de deelnemers elkaar de ontwikkelde producten.

Je gaat uiteindelijk naar huis met kennis en ervaring m.b.t. het werken met Virtuele Werelden. Bovendien heb je dan zelf een initiatief in Second Life ontwikkeld dat je kunt inzetten in jouw eigen onderwijs. Daarnaast heb je inspiratie kunnen opdoen tot breder gebruik van Virtuele Werelden in jouw Onderwijs.

The MetaMeets 2010 Internet Conference opens just as the 2009 movie “Avatar” has become a spectacular introduction to the idea of virtual environments. The conference, like the movie, is a bridge for the public to see what’s possible in a way that begins to draw them to virtual as well as real life. MetaMeets, Europe’s premier 3D Internet developer and community conference, comes to Dublin, Ireland, in 2010.

The conference opens just as the movie “Avatar” has become a spectacular introduction to the idea of virtual environments. The conference, like the movie, is a bridge for the public to see what’s possible in a way that begins to draw them to virtual as well as real life.

MetaMeets 2010 follows its successful inaugural conference last year in Amsterdam, Holland. “Metameets” appeared as a Top Ten Twitter Trending Topic on three separate occasions.

The event will take place this year in the Digital Hub Centre of Excellence, Dublin, on May 7th and 8th, 2010.

Content will be delivered in two formats, Live and Virtual:

• Participants may travel to Dublin for the Live event, or remain at home for the Virtual event.
• The presentation, content, and networking activities will be identical.
• Presentations are scheduled 8am-5pm GMT.
• Evening activities are scheduled 8pm-11pm GMT (social networking and entertainment).

MetaMeets 2010 addresses the question, “Who is driving Web 2.0 / 3D Internet / Virtual Environment Development: Business, Community, Education, Nonprofits, Diplomacy…” Content will be organized into three tracks:

• COMMUNITY – How the power of individuals to make a difference is being re-shaped by online communities.
• BUSINESS – Business engagement with 3D platforms.
• EDUTAINMENT – Modern as well as traditional approaches to making learning more fun as well as more profitable through the web.

Economic projections show the magnitude of increased attention being paid to Web 2.0 / 3D Internet / Virtual Environment applications:

• 160 Billion USD was spent by consumers on Retail Online Spending in 2008
• 600 Million USD was invested in Virtual Environments in 2008
• There were 140 Million active virtual world users in 2008, projected to increase to 2 Billion by end-2013
• Two (2) Billion USD was spent on Virtual Goods in 2009, projected to increase by 16% in 2010
  50% of Internet users will have a virtual ID by end- 2010
  80% of Internet users will live additional virtual lives by end-2011
• The 2009 movie “Avatar” is the first film to reach 2 Billion USD worldwide and has been nominated for nine Oscar Nominations including Picture, Directing, Cinematography, Art, Visuals, and Sound.

The conference will feature developers and users of modern Web 2.0 / 3D Internet / Virtual Environment platforms. Presenters will review and discuss showcase applications ranging from profit to nonprofit, work to pleasure, and enterprise to individual. It will provide tips, new ideas, and contacts.

• Web 2.0 is the term for online applications where content and interaction are provided by users themselves. These include blogs (WordPress), social networking (Facebook, Twitter), music (MySpace), video (YouTube), and instant messaging (Skype) sites that are equally used for friendship, business, pleasure, education, learning, and politics.
• 3D Internet is the term for online applications where users are present as avatars that can view, move and be viewed by others in a dynamic online environment. 3D Internet has become a crucial adjunct to business and social commerce in the last three years.
• Virtual Environment is the new term replacing, or synonymous with, “3D Internet.”

MetaMeets presentations, discussions, and networking activities will be streamed from the live location to virtual environments and will include participation from virtual attendees.

The Digital Hub is an Irish Government initiative to create an international centre of expertise for knowledge, innovation and creativity focused on digital content and technology enterprises.
